TWELFTH TASK
DIRECTIONS: In your blog write a short paper about "Intercultural Communication" by focusing on one of the following issues:
- Gary Althen, the author of the first core reading, defines values as ideas about what is right and wrong, desirable and undesirable, and so on" (par. 1). Discuss major differences you have noticed in values and assumptions while a foreign country or community that is culturally different from where you grew up" Did anything seem "wrong" or undesirable"?
- Examine a cultural pattern in your country that yoyu think a foreign visitor should be aware of in order to adjust more easily and avoid intercultural conflics and misunderstandings. Consider such things as values, beliefs, communication styles, and concepts of time.
- Describe the adjustment process you went through when entering a new cyulture or community. Did you go through any of the common stages described on page 38, including cultural shock? What cross-cultural problems and challenges did you encounter? How did you deal with them? What did you learn from your stay in the new culture? Did your values, beliefs, and behaviors change in any way?
- Explore major stumbling blocks, or obstacles, to effective intercultural communication and ways to minimize them. Focus on the origins of the barriers and methods of reducing them.
- Discuss discrimination against a particular group of people in your culture or community. Consider sterotyping and prejudice on the basis of such factors as race, ethnicity, gender, nationality, religion, socioeconomic class, and sexual orientation. Also conider the origins and effects of the discrimination.
