TENTH TASK
DIRECTIONS: Write in your instructor´s blog a critical commentary of the lecture “Where is the Outrage? Critical Pedagogy in Dark
Times” (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CAxj87RRtsc&t=178s) by
enhancing one of the following issues: the way education is being shaped by larger corporate and market driven forces, the
educative nature of culture and politics, the notion of teachers as public
intellectuals, and pedagogy as a project of a substantive democracy and as a
form of resistance and educated hope.
DUE: , 2018
According to the lecture I want to highlight the idea of how critical thinking can help the pedagogy in dark times. After I watched the video I realized that education is primarily related to other social dimensions as political and economic for example, so as I mentioned before in this case critical thinking is a means to an end to light up the ideas in the brain of students in order to see and analyze what is going on around them ,around their social dimensions as part of a human society. After students make that process they can come up with amounts of new ideas that can help to improve their social context, their economy, it is very clear the example that the lecture explained, lightning is a synonym of critical thinking in education.
ReplyDeleteTotally according to your opinion; the lecture leaves us a substantial learning in terms of the critical thinking that the being should develop, to then acquire a better perception of the dynamic governed in the social context.

ReplyDeleteI think teachers in Colombia should teach students what it means to be responsible for one’s actions as part of a society in order to be an engaged citizen who can expand and deepen the possibilities of democratic, social justice and equality in public life, to think and understand social issues and not only understand but go beyond that questioned about why is that happening? The only way we can achieve this is through the implementation of critical pedagogy in schools. In addition, according to Henry Giroux critical pedagogy stresses the importance of understanding what actually happens in classrooms and other educational settings by raising questions regarding what knowledge is of most worth, and what it means to know something because it is not only a way of understanding education, it is as well as a way of highlighting the act of participating in shaping the world in which we live.

ReplyDeleteMr. Giroux states that it is crucial for educators to reject the notion that higher education is simply a site for training students for the workforce and that the culture of higher education is synonymous with the culture of a business. All in all, educators have to recognize the power of education because we are in a world, in an era that each day is changing so, educators need a new language for adressing the changing context and facing issues that are afecting the quality of education because education has to develop critical capacities that make the students move and make aware of the great important aspects that it has not only to become professional and begin to work it's just to be aware that education is as crucial to undertanding and overcoming the current crisis of education and also because they have to be aware of the power of education.
ReplyDeleteThe main purpose of Henry Giroux's discourse is to make us ask ourselves, "how we teach, under what conditions and for what purposes". That question is the key to start evaluating the pedagogy with which we were educated and the pedagogy with we are teaching. He talks about the factors that manage the education that are, political, economical and social factors. All of them are related with the privatization of education and public institutions. I found it very relevant because is a ploblem that affects our country nowadays. Giroux says that if those public institutions dessapeared, there would be an arotion of the discourse of democracy, community, justice, queality, public values and common good. But I think that if it happened, the main responsibles of that would be us because of the phenomenon of apaty that invadess our society.
ReplyDeleteThose refflections make me think of my labour as future teacher as he states: "Teaches have to educate young people with the capacities to think, question, doubt, and imagine...". Imagine and create a just and equal public education.
Education is so fundamental for society, that even the market forces, corporates, and private industries want to get their hands on it. In our society, any slidely change we do to education has its consequences and industries had founded it out. Nowdays, schools are working as industries where children and teenagers are filled for the purpose of mere work. This issue happens because our modern work needs workers and middle social class people to keep developing the same work in the same industries. Thus, the view of school is being reducting and shaping into the interesets of the higher and powerful classes.
ReplyDeleteMoreover, all this new shaping issue is missleading the real function of education in schools. Schools were born to provide spaces where students can develop their culture and politics as an advance form of Ancient Greek Gymnasium. At the beginning, children attented to public elementary school in order to get knowledge about the universe. Later on, in higher levels, teenagers were expected to search schools in non-public places. There, teenagers would debate and discuss their knowledge with peers or tutors. Therefore, all of this was done because of a ideal political and cultural state where men were able to participate in a country's decisions (Democracy). That is, current society is damaging the cultural and political perspective of schools and turn it into a market business.
Also, this new changes affect the role of teachers. When we turn schools into a mere work business, we are taking away the intellectual role of teacher and making them just instructors. Teachers' role is more over passing knowledge and it is to build a conscious and critical person who can think in the society through pedagogy. Thinking is refered to the action of propose and improve the reality situation. So, as big companies change the educationa purpose of schools, teachers' actions becomes obsolete and their place can be occupy by anyone.
Finally, education in schools is losing its way and all thanks to the coorporative interesets of some little. When in reality, education itself was born to form individuals who can think and improve their reality's situation, someone who can propose and participate in real democracy. If we do not take action into how people is being educated, we will be suffering the inminents kicks in some near future.
Nowadays, in our society there is a minor population who control what is produced, distributed and circulated. However, it is not only influenced in the economical or commercial field, but also in the educational field and political field. In the educational field there is an enormous influence over what text will be distributed in schools having a significant impact on controlling mass students. That is why teachers have a significant role to emancipate students to have the need to think critically, dialogue about social issues or relevant topics that are in their surroundings. Teachers need to be asked to being creative and to think critically, teaching is not to teach theory but also practice in order to enhance knowledge and practice to produce a reflection or a constructive critique.
ReplyDeleteSince we know eduaction is the foundation of society, industries and powerful corporations have been directly influencing in the path this education should have. In other words, this institutions are leading schools to prepare submissive workers for their industries. critical thinking is not required in this shaped education, due to the fact that the dominant institutions only need workforce.
ReplyDeletein my opinion, Private corporations and that kind of hegemony is missleading the path education orginally should be directed because education should be the awakening of critical thinking . that enable equility, and at the same time democracy. but, as hegemony is promoting this inequality in culture and knowledge, it is only a demagogy, where we believe we are having the same opportunities and vote. but, in fact, we have no the same conditions than the dominant culture.
Anyways, pedagogy should be still a form of resistance and educated hope, by lighting in young learners, the desire of learning, and this particular curiosity that enhance the this minority not to let the hegemony to dominate their minds.
Very good point of view, unfortunately the power of the anarchy that has always ruled our current societies, has damaged the equity of the dynamism that exists in the field of education. Unfortunately, pedagogy is affected by that manipulation, being forced to resist the development that governs the teaching and learning process.

ReplyDeleteToday, it is important as a teachers not only being conductors of knowledge to our students . I think that we have to light student's lives through the discussion as a Henry giroux mentions in the video because it allows students to go beyond the classroom, they will analyze the context that surrounds them , they will propose new alternatives to the problems that they encounter ,etc. Also it is important to highlight that in critical pedagogy, knowledge is socially constructed by several individuals that live in the same context and each one has a different perspective about an issue, then they share their view and build a solution to it .

ReplyDeleteThe implementation of critical pedagogy is essential to the development of our society. We as prospective teachers have an important role of change the way of students see the things that happen around them, we need to create new strategies in order to involve the learners in activities, where they should break down the barriers of thinking. Leaving aside the traditional parameters that focus in memorize and dominated instruction. Designing an education based on the using their imagination and learning of diverse topics politics, scientific, technical, and cultural that encourage them to take part in social issues that transform the world.
Nowadays, there is a big problem that is tied to Pedagogy in our educational system. It is no secret to anyone that pedagogy has been a white object to be manipulated in an individualistic way by the regime of the dominant social class. For this reason, the great social gaps begin, which they attribute to the affectations in all the different areas and / or cultural, economic, political and welfare aspects, generating large falls that affect the dynamics and balance in the context of the society. In addition, pedagogy ceases to be equitable in the same field of education in a subordinate way to a dominant way, contributing to the growth of power towards high-ranking people.
ReplyDeleteOn the other hand, we as educators need a new language that addresses these contextual gaps in each issue of inequality in terms of financial, cultural, political, economic and technological resources. In addition, we should highlight the great benefits of pedagogy in the social sphere, which encourage the teaching techniques infused to different skills for the human being exercised in a moral way.
The great value that pedagogy entails in education provides many schemes of how the human being sees the world around him towards a more consistent perspective, in terms of the actions taken in his daily life. This would be a great contribution to the improvement of our educational system, leading to the strengthening of the dynamics and flexibility exercised in the teaching and learning process in a more equitable manner.
One issue what I want to stand out is the notion of teachers as public intellectuals because everyday passes it becomes harder to recognize the role or responsability that educators have in the society. Lacking a self-consciously democratic political approach make teachers often reduced that teachers engage in formalistic rituals, they are absorbed with bureaucratic demands, and unconcerned either with disturbing and urgent social problems that confront the society or the consequences of one's pedagogical practices. Thus, it is important that educators should combine the mutually interdependent roles of critical educator and active citizen which requires finding ways to connect to the practice of the classroom teaching with issues that bear on their lives in order to provide the conditions for students to view themselves as critical agents capable of making those who exercise authority and power answerable for their actions. The role of a critical education is not to train students only for jobs, but to educate them to question critically the institutions, policies, and values that shape their lives, their relationships to others, and their connections to the world.
ReplyDeleteIt is important to know how critical thinking can help change that pedagogy in those dark times because critical thinking is the means to end this time of darkness. On the contrary, this illuminates and analyzes the ideas that the students have in their brains and in this way they can contribute quantities of new ideas that can help to improve their social context.
ReplyDeleteOn the other hand, evaluate what pedagogy we are using through these children according to our experience that we had when we were children, for example, "how we teach, under what conditions and for what purposes".
Through the implementation of critical pedagogy in schools, this could make students more responsible for their own actions as part of a society in order to be a citizen committed to the possibilities of democratic, social justice and equality in life public as much as thinking and how to understand social problems.
According to Henry Giroux, education and everyday life is being shaped by larger corporate and markets driven forces. For that reason, powerful coorporations prioritize that enter in the workforce and being prepared just for that is so crucial for success. That's why Giroux highlight the importance of critical pedagogic because it helps develop consciousness of freedom, recognize authoritarian tendencies, connect knowledge to power and the ability to take constructive action.
ReplyDeleteAccording to the lecture critical pedagogy and the video “Where is the Outrage? I realized the importance of education in society and how everybody wants to be his/her hand on it. In order to take some advantages of it, and what is the role for education as a political moral and ethical practice. In others words, how government can manipulate their citizen through education, that is why the importance of having critical thinker such as students and teacher in education and pedagogy.
ReplyDeletethe great political, economic, social and cultural movements have affected education, so much that it limits students and teachers when it comes to teaching. The word defend we know but do not apply, in reality happens to most of us, we do not defend our own, we do not demand quality and good education in the case of public schools where we work or study and in our university. All aspects of individual possessive society have not anything beyond his or self-interest because that has taught us. Then there comes for us as future teachers and Henry Giroux asks us how are we teaching? In what conditions are we teaching? and what purpose are we going to achieve? with these questions is where we as future teachers question ourselves where we are going, how we can change the future of our students, how we can teach them to be critical of different aspects of their lives, how to teach them that privatizing the public is not a solution, and that seeking equality for a community is better than thinking individually.
ReplyDeleteAs a phrase by Jean Piajet says The main objective of education in schools should be the creation of men and women who are capable of doing new things, not simply repeating what other generations have done; men and women who are creative, inventive and discoverers, who can be critical, verify and not accept, all that is offered to them
.
Talking about pedagogy as a project of a substantive democracy, and as a form of resistance and educated hope. As Mr. Giroux says, there is a strong necessity to recall the real role of education, the traditional way has indoctrinated us, becoming passive individuals in a society which needs people who are able to mobilize. Teachers have forgotten that pedagogy and education are really connected, when teaching respond to student’s needs and contexts, when you are interested on living democracy inside of your classroom. Students need a place to share, confront or exchange ideas and opinions; in which knowledge could be constructed between teachers, students, research and material.
ReplyDeleteWe are accustomed to receive knowledge as machines, as if were are getting a service and not developing our skills as human beings. He claims that students do not see school as pleasure, because they do not develop their imagination, they do not create. There is a necessity to educate according what individuals really need, we cannot continue working on standardized curriculums, which are copied from other places, it is important to recognize our strengths and weakness, and start thinking in those issues
Nowadays, we live in a globalized world, which has been modified over the years in different areas according to the particular interests of capitalism, one of them is the education field. Today, education, in general, has begun to train individuals who seek to compete in a working market and not political subjects who seek to challenge the oppressive class.
ReplyDeleteMainly, the critical pedagogy is focused on training subjects with the capacity for inquiry, those who go beyond theoretical knowledge and who are capable of using that acquired knowledge to transform society in a positive way. Educational institutions should be based on democracy and education should privilege the oppressed classes, so that in this way they can have equal opportunities.
Nowadays there are many social and economic theories that are based on explaining how different social classes are necessary for the construction of a solid economic system. The capitalism currently promoted in Colombia is based on private property and the prominence given to large industries. In this economic model, the main services such as education and health are produced privately. this social theory has affected the conception of education for critical theory.
All these complex processes of globalization have deeply affected the development of a critical pedagogy in global education since the contents used in industrialized education are empty contents and alien to our reality. These standardized contents are carried out to not arouse curiosity in students and to avoid emancipatory thinking. Critical pedagogy has not been socially accepted, due to its liberating purpose.
After watching the video "Where is the Outrage? Critical Pedagogy in Dark Times" by Henry Giroux, I came to the conclusion that is possible that teachers are not doing their work in the best way and education at schools is not fulfilling its real objective; as a consequence of it, citizens are being easily manipulated by the government.
ReplyDeleteBeyond offering knowledge in contents, what is the real objective of education? Education and pedagogy need to work together. In this way, teachers are in the duty of providing students the necessary tools to become critical thinkers capable of solving social, economic and political problems. students with good morals and values at school will become good citizens.
Critical pedagogy is described by Henry Giroux as an "educational movement, guided by passion and principle, to help students develop consciousness of freedom, recognize authoritarian tendencies, and connect knowledge to power and the ability to take constructive action." Education has traditionally consisted of the two fundamental elements of teaching and learning, with a heavy emphasis on teaching. The teacher-dependent education system and time. Also depends on location and situation. The education system nowadays undergoes a transition from a heavy emphasis on teaching and learning. Education creates the courseware for the students will learn anytime or anywhere at a pace that is comfortable for them. Despite that, we still see something called “courseware control” which means; elite members of society as still control the flow of information and courseware. This society promotes a culture of questioning, that says nothing about what kind of education we have or should be implied by how and what educators teach, and only teachers know how to prepare us for the world to come. Therefore, the role of educators is to give a meaning of responsibility and develop a principle notion of educational leadership. Leaders that promote visions of a good society or a better society with a critical thinking that help people to understand and act for civic action and democratic change.
ReplyDeleteIn the video "Where is the Outrage? Critical Pedagogy in Dark Times" by Henry Giroux. He explains us the big problem in education because educators do not take into account that some aspects like politics, culture, consumerims and democracy are not understanding in a good way. They are changed the world; for this reason, educators must teach in a different way. They have to command the Critical Pedagogy, it is the principal tool for education. If teachers practice Critical Pedagogy, students can interpret the world in another form and they will become critical thinkers because, they are able to share their ideas, points of view and taking decisions that change our society and world.
ReplyDeleteHenry Giroux, refers in his speech according to the following problem he way education is being shaped by larger corporate and market driven forces, in the process that has advanced over the years, the giant power marketing and corporate of large companies and people powerful, that in some way or another try to seize everything that is around him. In this case education or as we talk about sometimes is about buying love or morality. Education is something intangible, it is a great power with which we can build great nations, thoughts and people; but at the moment in which this education is commercialized and used for the profit of big companies or political powers, that is where the true power of education begins to be ruined.
ReplyDeleteEducation beyond a component of scientific, mathematical or linguistic knowledge, is also a component of integral for people, with education seeks to create an intellectual but be a good citizen, someone with social and environmental awareness, someone who uses its educational power to help build a better world, not fill pockets with money.
The current social order promotes inequality, degradation to the environment, and elevation of war and militarization, which means, today society is broken, what may explains why people choose someone like Donald Trump to lead their country. Nowadays, agency and marketplace try to put education under control and domination, which implies, education has been relegated to a private affair, however as educators we can reverse their purpose.
ReplyDeleteEducators and intellectuals should reject the notion that higher education is simply a site for training students for the workforce, standing against those powerful elites that try to get education for working and not critical thinking purposes. Not only are they the ones that try to turn education as a service, but also consider students as customers and not as social change agents.
Education should result in critically and socially engaged citizens that struggle for change in the society, and this is only achieved, if educators foster an education that provides individuals with critical thinking. Consequently, society would turn into a formative culture where democracy and social justice matter, and thinking and acting otherwise is legitimated. If we really want a change, we have to take education and pedagogy seriously as they are the outcome of struggle, as they fight against market driven forces that have shaped some aspects of education, politics, culture and democracy.

ReplyDeleteColombia is a country that has been affected by the conflict of war for decades. As a consequence, it has left as victims’, entire communities in which there are children and young people which needs to be involved in the educative system to transform their reality. Therefore there is a must to stake out the Pedagogy of it. This need to be inclusive, a system in which every individual find its space of participation.
ReplyDeleteIn order reach the set goal is important to reflect on the way teachers are teaching. It is important to remark the importance of our profession that is because we are not creating a product as if we are in a factory, but we are forming people for life. We as teachers should know that our main purpose is facilitating the tools to the students in order for them to create knowledge in order to start transforming the reality into a better one.
